A Graphical Gimmick |
| Rick from Bklyn, NY U.S.A. says (28/Jan/2003): |
As a fervent supporter of the Need for Speed franchise, I was quite appalled by EA's latest installment; Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2. I must admit that I was very enthusiastic over the title during its development phase. So enthusiastic infact, that I frequented the official website just to marvel at its graphical grandeur. It was only when I purchased and completed the entire game (without the aid of cheats I might add) that I realized how second rate the NFS franchise has become. The graphical front was a blistering success with dynamic lighting and beautifully rendered backgrounds, not to mention the highly detailed and polygon-rich 3D models. The sense of speed is bang on and the sensation of torque grips you at the start of every race as your tires struggle to gain a firm footing on the tarmac. So what's the problem? You might ask. It's quite simple really, especially since its been done before. This is a classic tale of graphical gimmickery. The product's overwhelming gaphics and phenominal number of exotic supercars seeks to obscure the fact that the title lacks the excellent depth found in previous NFS titles. Please note that depth and variety are two very different concepts. Absent is the ability to customize colour schemes, the tuning screen of old and the car/manufacturer info screens are gone. The final straw for me was the omission of the highly rewarding replay cameras. As many Need for Speed veterans know, there's nothing more satisfying than watching a daring escape from the law in a movie-esque and cinematic manner. Coupled with the clever new slow motion camera, EA could have set a new standard in terms of repalys. The dash and in-$#< remove me > at !pit views complete with the gearshift noises is now nowhere to be found. I discovered that engine noises aren't as unique or realistic as they used to be. Police officers seem taget your vehicle considerably more than the other racers in most cases. One can also imagine just how frustrating it is to pass a stationary police Crown Victoria at 130mph just to have him breathing down your neck in 5 secs flat. Clearly, giving these guys NOS took alot away from realistic vehicle performance. Police cruisers teleport to various locations after a bust or during chases (when backup is requested) in older titles, they realistically patrolled the entire track in either direction. Their ability to join a chase was appropriately dependent upon their positions throughout the track. I won't complain about the absence of damage modelling in realization that most manufacturers wouldn't want to see their machines wrecked. I will however, complain about why the GC, X-Box, and the PC have the inferior version of NFSHP2. Was this intentional? Nevertheless, its quite obvious the PS2 version of this port possesses the much coveted replay cameras of legend and an array of extra features that somehow missed the other versions. In conclusion, Hot Pursuit2 for the Gamecube being devoid of the above features, falls short of the glory it could have and should have recieved. Try renting if depth and realism is your thing. For those who confuse variety (number of tracks/cars) for depth this title will not dissappoint.

The best of the franchise |
| Andrew Jaworski from Indianapolis, Indiana says (21/Jun/2003): |
If you love cars, and I mean the most exotic cars in the world, then your gonna love this game. I'm a big auto-racing fan, and that's why I got the game, and when I first played it, I was amazed on how the graphics looked and how realistic the cars could move at high speeds. The game picked out some of the best cars I know. My favorites are the Dodge Viper GTS, Mercedes CLK-GTR, Ferrari F50, McLaren F1, and my true favorite, the Lamborghini Diablo 6.0 VT. The racing is always action-packed, especially on the hot pyrsuit mode. It is amazingly fun on advanced with cops, because they keep comin' with more and more action. The only flaws I have with this game is when you look at a replay, you can't rewind, it doesn't have other angles besides the ones you used during the race, and if the race is long, it won't record all of the race. I actually give this game a rating of 9.5, but I can't put that for a score, so I give it a 10. Besides any of the replay problems, I recommend you get this game. You will love it. That goes for you, Jay Leno.

Not Bad |
| FordEdge01 from Orlando, FL says (7/Oct/2002): |
I recently rented NFS: Hot Pursuit 2 for Gamecube after weeks of anticipation. I found that it is the best racing game yet for the Gamecube although I think EA missed the mark slightly. The graphics are crisp and the frame rate excellent. The drivablity of the cars is much more realistic then say, Burnout (lol). The problem is that this game was designed for the PS2 first, then reformatted for the Gamecube and Xbox. EA Games could have made this game the "Gran Turismo 3" of the Gamecube, instead they took the fastest route to get a return on thier investment. The Multiplayer mode is what bothered me the most. On PS2 one person can be a cop and the other the speeder, on Gamecube both of you have to be cops. I am a big fan of the NFS games, I played NFS High Stakes and NFS Porsche Unleased for PC until my joystick gave up. This is not a bad game, however it is also not a great game. I guess us poor, neglected Gamecube owners will continue to be shunned by the big game makers, what a surprise.

pretty good game overall |
| SOUTHBEATZ1169 from Jacksonville, FL USA says (19/May/2003): |
I thought this one was pretty good, my favorite probably always will be nfs3 but nonetheless this one is still a great one, alot better than 4 and 5. I did notice the tuning menu was not there but that doesn't bother me, i tune all the cars from the actual .viv files so that didn't bother me, i haven't played it alot yet, but once i get this 911 tuned up just how i need it, i'll see if this hp2 will keep up with how nfs3 was when i tuned cars to run almost 400mph and be able to slide through corners without losing control, that was the fun part, all that speed, if i can get them tuned that way for this one, i'd say hp2 is the best nfs game yet, unfortunately consoles suck and you have to have the pc version to be able to achieve all of this that i do, but those of you that have it for pc could enjoy the best nfs game yet

Best Racing simulator on the Game Cube (Yet)!! |
| john from chester city uk England says (13/Nov/2002): |
Need 4 Speed is the best car game yet on the Cube. The graphics are smooth and the details of the cars are good. The only disappointing thing for me is the replays i Feal the replays are a bit limited ie you cannot change camera angles to see youre tear jurking crashes of 180000 pound MF1. But nothing is perfect a nice perk of the game is getting behind the wheel of a police cruiser and getting to deploy stingers and helicopters. Also 2 players are a bit limited when you go on the options of being cops thers no option of 1 player being a cop and one being the racer i believe if it had that option it would have made the game a lot more intresting. Fun Wise it kept me busy for a couple of hours but car games have there limits of lifespan.

It simply brilliant |
| Banks from Durban says (1/Apr/2004): |
The best car racing game ever. I like the feel of the BMW M5, its so real, its like driving the actual car. Just don't try to play in on a pentium God knows what and expect it to rock! I mean the guys writing negative reviews probably tried playing it ain a 486 computer especially the comments that the game is slow!!!! Go get yerself a fast computer and good sound and you'll enjoy this game, then write another review.
Though i think the game is a bit tough, especially when looking at the fact that one has to make points to unlock more expensive cars etc. A good trick is to save enough, unload a very good track and a good expensive car to take care of the cops, then start racing and make maximum points each race.

IT ROCKS!!! |
| Philip Guiver from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada says (26/Dec/2002): |
This game is the best racing game out that I have tried. I never rented it. I just found lots of information on the web about it, so i just went ahead and bought the damn game! There are only about two main problems in the game.
1) When you get busted, the graphics on the people are kind of pixelated and blurry.
2) In "Be the Cop" mode in multiplayer on the gamecube, one can NOT be the getaway car and one the cop. You have to both be the cops.
Otherwise it is great; you can get well known cars like Porsche, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, and McLaren. I have rated those cars from slowest to fastest. Of course there are many other cars a well. I give this game a 9 out of 10 on the scale.

It's the best racing game yet! |
| Rebecca from Clovis,CA says (29/Nov/2003): |
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2, I think is an excellent racing game. I love the graghics and there are so many awesome cars to choose from after you collect enough money.Even collecting enough money to unlock new cars and tracks can be exciting especially with all the challenges this game has to offer. One thing that was new to me was even having to be the cop and pull over people. I found that fun especially after being ramed by so many of them. Also another fun part is racing against someone and finding so many shorcuts or sideroads you can take during each track. You can go up mountains, along market places, or just stay on the normal road. Just make sure to avoid tour busses. They really hurt.

Wicked! |
| Amy from California, U.S.A. says (16/Mar/2003): |
This is a wicked cool game! I got it for X-Mas and when I saw it I was all "Arg, I suck at racing games!" but when I got home and tried it, I was like "Whoa, this is tight, the bomb, woo!" and I became a better racer. The graphics are excellent, it's totally realistic and the cars are excellent. Now whenever I think about it, I'm trippin'! Plus, it gets you into cars more. I'm only 12 and I've already picked out what car I'm going to buy, all because of this game! Don't even bother renting it, just go right out and buy it!

NFS: Hot Pursuit (PS2) |
| cire from chicago says (23/Oct/2002): |
I returned the playstation version of this game to get the PC version. I wanted better resolution with my PC monitor. The PC version blows big time. It stinks--crappy handling, in the car only replays, no voice overs, weak graphics (nice reolution though), the horn honks a full second after you press the button. A completely different developer created this mess. GET THE PLAYSTATION 2 VERSION! I think EB is going to give me dirty looks when I go back to re-exchange back to the PS2 version. Shheeesh! Forgive me EB.

NFS first time player |
| find it out from who knows says (14/Dec/2002): |
This game is awesome i'm not much of a car fan but man this game got me into it. There's Lamborghinis, Porsche, BMWs, and Corvettes. If you want to play an awesome game play it i gave it a 10 even though theres not that many levels to really play in each level theres different onsticales. This game is one of the best games I've ever played and I'll keep playing It. Take it froom me or you don't have to, but this is the best racing games or any game I've really ever played. This game is great go get It!

First time NFS player |
| Tek from Milwaukee, WI says (15/Oct/2002): |
With the exception of 1.)Looking like you're driving what the Speeometer says 2.)A Larger variety of companys, like nissan and what not and 3.) a Cop mode where one player is the cop and the other is speeding, and co-op-cop modes, This game is the tightest! That is, Next to Burnout. Burnout 2 should be tight, but How can you compare these two games? They are both very different, and they both rok the tops of racers of their kind! Let's hope the new FZero is as good as, if not better than these!

Stunning |
| scott from Richmond, Usa says (15/Dec/2002): |
Although I am not a fan of racing games, this seems to be the best one on the gamecube. It has a vast car and course selection. The police A.I. is great even though the busted animations absolutely suck. The graphics are very crisp and the lighting was fenominal. Another aspect of the gamecube version is that there is little car damage. So if youre a fan of street racing games and exotic cars, i suggest you pick up this game for PS2 rather than gamecube.

ahhhrrrgg |
| A gamer says (14/Oct/2002): |
why am i subjected to this crap? i love this game but what is the point in making it worse on the game cube? if this was a game that was updated every year i would just buy it next year but ive waited for this game forever and before i read the reviews i was pretty happy with it. i also own a ps2 and i bought it fot the cube thinking it was an exact port. i love the game but cant help feeling i got stuck with substandard $#< remove me > at !.

You can even be the cop and bust other people(and you can be different cars even when you are the cop). My favorite car is the lambroghini murchialogo. THE WORST GAME EVER!!! |
| Tanner from Fort Worth, TX USA says (3/Jul/2003): |
This game has to be the worst racing game I have ever played! The graphics are terrible, the gameplay stinks, the speed of the game is slower than dirt, and to top it all off, IT SELLS AT THE SAME PRICE AS THE GOOD GAMES!! I mean who would want to spend there mony (and more importently there time) on a game as bad as this. TRUST ME! DONT BUY IT.

I think no car game could beat this one |
| Adam Heller from Philadelphia,Pa says (26/Jun/2003): |
When I had first started playing the game I knewby the intro this game was gonna be good. Then when I played the game i was soo happy i had a game i could really enjoy. If there is three games you play this year play Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2 three times and more because this is the perfect game to play if you like cars.
