| A must have game for your Gamecube game collection. | | Brendon Abbl from Oregon City, Oregon says (12/Jul/2004): | I think this game became big when Pirates of the Carrabian came out...Well, I first heard of this game when I was walking through a store and saw it on the shelf, and it seemed to call out to me: "Get me...Get me, I am fun..."...So I bought it, not even knowing what I was getting myself into.
Enough about me, more about the game. The great things about this game are as follows. The plot is probably one of the greatest RPG plots to have ever been thought up. A wide range of playable characters, and equiptment. Graphics are pretty smooth, music is fairly good. Boss Battle songs is probably the best. Some good bad guys (The kind you love hating). Monster design is a bit good. Lot's of new added features from the Dreamcast. For example, more crew-mates, bounty hunting, directors cut, cut-scenes, etc. It's fun to play, and it's fun that you are able to move freely wherever you want...At the end of the game.
The downfalls really hurt this game. Though there are plenty of characters to choose from, you allways have three (Vyse, Aika, Fina), and you only get to choose the fourth. There's real no fun side-quests. Only Bounty-hunting, and that's a bit short. And what's with the talking? They say something, maybe something long, but it has nothing to do with what the little bar is saying. For example, the screen writes: "Yes, sir. We'll get on it as fast as we can, because we hate Vyse.", but the voice will say: "Aye aye!" It never matches, and it gets kinda repetitave after awhile. Some bosses are a bit too hard for you to just go straight through the game, it takes some leveling up if you really want to enjoy, but even that gets old.
Overall, this game is quite possibaly the best RPG the Gamecube has to offer, but gameplay get's a little repetitive after awhile. My advyse (get it, Vyse?...Ah nevermind. For those of you who don't know he's the main character) to you is block out that little voice that calls out to you when it's sitting on the shelf.
This game get's a repetitive Eight...Out of Ten.
| Best rpg EVER made- this is why... | | A gamer from Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA says (27/Nov/2003): | I was blown over by the superiority of the rpg game, Skies of Arcadia Legends. It is a perfect example of a great rpg game, and is a title that makes owning a Gamecube so great! I had already known that this was a great title when I bought this game because I already had it for Dreamcast, but I am amazed at how much bonus features are packed into this already great game! The graphics are the only minor setback, but these are the same graphics from the Dreamcast version. Not bad, considering these graphics are about three years old. The controls fit the Gamecube controller perfectly! Not a single fault- and I have played this game 70 hours and up. I got this game nine months ago, and I still find myself popping it into my Gamecube. The fun factor is extremely amasing, and the boss battles are the most eventive I've seen in a long time. The battle system works great, and the plot twists will feed on your inner soul. The spell and special system works great, and finding all of the moonberries is something I still haven't accomplished! It took me 40 hours just to get to the final boss, not to mention It took me two hours to beat the final boss! Emotions are great, and you feel as though the characters are your dearest friends. I loved how it never got old to go on a scavenger hunt to find all of the items. Puzzles never get repetitive, and the 3d backgrounds are amazing. I wish the graphics were updated a little more, but I can deal wtih it. Rpg fan or not, I demand that you buy this game, trustme-you'll love this title, and if not, tell me why not.

| The Ups and Downs of this RPG | | Tori from Eldon MO USA says (25/Sep/2003): | Wow. I rented this game from my local supermarket because I couldn't decide what to get. I always pick up random RPGs and try them out. I found this one wasn't your regular RPG. The beginning was enough to get me interested. It drew me in hook line and sinker before I even knew it. The graphics could've been a lot better considering it was on the Gamecube, but the rest of it makes up for that. There could've been more voiceovers, you should be able to pick if you want text or voice. The music is awesome, especially when you fight monsters on the deck of your airship. The characters were great! I felt like I was getting to know them, as I do with any adventure I take on. When I play, it's just a challenge, to watch my characters grow up and learn new things. The game itself takes awhile to beat, but once you beat it, you immediantly press new game to start all over to fix mistakes from your last game and to find treasures and Discoveries you missed. The replay value is very high. No two adventures will really be the same. There's so many ways to change it, it's great. I think I typed your eyes off long enough so, see you and I hope you try this game. Peace out.
| Is This Game Great or WHAT??????!!!!!!! | | VyseQueen7 from Nazareth, USA says (30/Aug/2003): | This has been the most AMAZING RPG I have ever played!! I mean, I'm a girl, and when school started, for science, you wrote about your hobbies, and I put playing Skies of Arcadia for one of them! Some of the girls looked at me like I was crazy, but I didn't care! Man, this game rocks! It has so-so graphics and sound, and after a while fighting all those battles does get on your nerves, but if you look past all that, you find a truly ingenious game they have created. My game was erased twice, but I never gave up. I just started again. I've just about memorized the beginning part. I think all the characters are cool (with the exception of Fina) and I hope the world rates this game 1000/10!!!!
| This is a MUST HAVE GAME | | Austin the battle lord from Acton, MA says (28/Aug/2003): | Now, I'm not usually an RPG kind of person, but as soon as I started this one, I was like, "Whoa! This one might be woth it!" Later, I found out I was wrong.
It was more than woth the while. This game is possibly the greatest game I'e ever seen. There are great battle themes, stupendous music, invigorating characters, and so many side quests, it will leave your head spinning about which one to go after next. I bought this game a few months ago, and I still haven't defeated the entire thing! That's what makes it awesome! It has so much to do, so many places to go, and if a sequel to this doesn't ever copme out, I think i will make one myself! I'm serious!
Sure the graphics are a bit on the down side, and the turn based battles can get on your neves after a while, but if you have the time, go buy it and play it! If you can't buy it, rent it! JUST PLAY IT ALREADY!!!!!!!!!! (cough, hack, wheeze)
| One of the best RPGs ever to grace the gaming world | | Unseen Slayer from Warrington, England says (13/Aug/2003): | Skies of Arcadia was originally released for the Dreamcast a couple of years ago, but now it's back to help the RPG lacking Gamecube as Skies of Arcadia Legends.
Now I never played the original so I don't know how they compare, but I can tell you that this version I played is easily one of the best RPGs ever produced. If you have any extra money lying around go out and get it now. Don't even finish my review. Go now! For those of you still here I'd try getting another job so that you can get this game as soon as possible.
Graphics 8/10
Now I admit that this game does not have the best graphics ever seen on the Gamecube. It isn't up to par with many other games, but keeping in mind this is from a dated game it has quite good graphics. Nothing spectacular, but good. The animations for special attacks though are amazing! Very rich in colour and incredibly fluid.
Sound 8/10
I'll start on a low note. The sound effects in this game aren't particularly good. There are a few voice overs for the characters for when they say certain phrases (such as thank you, sure, etc) during a text sequences or special attacks. The problem is that a good deal of the time the voice over doesn't match the text. The other problem is that the characters all seem to have throat problems. Half the voice overs for the same character sound like they have different actors; completely different voices. Some of the effect like climbing a ladder also sound bad (like fruit being thrown at pipes). That said, the actual music in this game is fantastic! Each town has a different theme to it, all of which are great. I find myself sitting in towns for long periods of time, even after I've done what I needed to do, just to finish listening to the song. The music alone more than compensates for the voice overs and other effects.
Gameplay 10/10
I can honestly say that the gameplay in this game is the best I have ever played in an RPG. It is a turn based RPG, which allows you to carefully plan out your turns. I have beaten this game and you can believe me when I tell you planning is critical to this game. As the normal monster battle gameplay goes it is pretty average. Basic Attack, Magic, Item, Special Attack, and Focus (charge) commands. Nothing too exciting. But this game has a new idea in terms of the cost of magic and special attacks. Magic Points are almost never consumed. All magic spells cost 1 point, special attacks cost none. What this game uses is a Spirit Meter which gradually charges over every turn. You use these points to cast your spells. This makes the game much more challenging, forcing you to defend and calculate how to attack this turn, and have enough points left for next turn. I think it is amazing.
The next main sequence to mention are the ship battles. Not only does this game give you the standard monster vs. hero battles, but you also have battles in the air against huge monsters and pirates in your ship. Fantastic! It is one of the best features of this game. If they had created a game of just the ship battles, I probably would have bought that one too.
Apart from the main quest there are also a few sidequests including finding discoveries around the world (sailing around finding new landmarks), collecting moonfish to feed a bird, finding Chams so that a little morphing creature can evolve, fighting with Piastol the Angel of Death, and tracking down and defeating a few bounties.
Story 9/10
A basic overview of the story is you live the life of Vyse; a pirate of the blue rogues who flies the Skies of Arcadia, on his father's ship, in search of adventure, fighting the evil Vaulan Armada and just generally enjoying himself. On his travels he learns that he must gather 6 elemental crystals to prevent the end of the world as we know it.
The story of Skies of Arcadia is very strong and deep, but is also quite cliche. I think we've all seen the the elemental crystals before. However, it is well executed with lots of twists and turns that will keep gamers intrigued and coming back for more.
Replay 8/10
The story and gameplay will have you coming back to play it again and again. It will be hard to tire of this game. But sadly like many RPGs and games that revolve around stories, most of the magic is lost after the first time through.
Overall 9/10 (not an average)
| Remake takes the cake! | | A gamer from Minneapolis, USA says (31/Jul/2003): | Ramake, rehash, remix, whatever you want to call Skies of Arcadia Lengends, it is an extremely boss game. For the 'Cube, it is the undeniably best RPG, and chances are it won't be topped for eons to come. Sure, the graphics are outdated, but it has it's own style. As a fanatic player and still owner of the original DC version, I was uber-excited about this director's cut of Skies of Arcadia, and the visuals were the last thing I was caring about. The story is an enthralling epic. From the first thirty seconds of play to the end of the game, it is non-stop swashbuckling action. Some say that The Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker is the best RPG for the GCN. Well, those people are mistaken. Number one, Zelda is an adventure game if you ask me. It has a few RPG aspects, but it is a totally different kind of game, so don't compare it to the fantabulousness of Skies. Skies has what everyone wants in an RPG. The story is deep and rivetting. The characters are likable and cool. The enemies are evil and dastardly. The world is enormous, and it is full of adventure, side-quests, characters to interact and join forces with, monsters to destroy, treasures to find, and the list goes on. Anyone who has a Gmaecube and has sixty or more hours to play the game should purchase it. I personally could play the game endlessly, just to find everything, because I know I would not get bored. It is that much fun. The ship battles are sweet, the magic and super moves are amazing, and the multidude of findables is quite impressive. Skies or Arcadia, be it the original or the Legendary version is quite possibly the best RPG out there, and if ever there were a console that needed and deserved a big RPG hit, it would be the 'Cube. Rock on Nintendo! Now I reccomend that everyone goes and plays this game. If you are like me, the only thing you could possibly be doing about this game other than playing it is appraising it.
| Best (and only actual) RPG for GCN! | | Nice Mr. ss4gd from Bridgewater, New Jersey, USA says (6/Jul/2003): | Many say that Zelda:The Wind Waker is THE best RPG for GCN so far, and Toonami (A programming block on Cartoon Network) agrees, giving it's very first 10/10 to the newest installment of the Zelda videogame series. Some, such as myself, disagree. It absolutely could NEVER be the best RPG, as it lacks many elements such as a turn-based combat system. Many people talk of RPGs as the best type of videogame in existence, because they don't neccesarily require skill of hand, but rely solely on the players intellect and luck, and most who hear this will realize that there are actually very few RPGs in existence. In addition, many RPGs have so much put into the story line that ratings will be lowered due to poor graphics and sound. Many of my friends cannot make a single complaint or negative comment about the graphics or sounds, so that should settle it! Skies of Arcadia: Legends is the best RPG for GCN (and all systems in general).
| A great game! This is the best RPG game that I've ever seen. ^_^ | | Jim from Pennsylvania, USA says (24/Jun/2003): | this a great RPG. Although the graphics seem like they have been untouched since the Dreamcast days, the rest of the game is great. the sound of the airships sound like real airships! (If they were invented) ^_^ the controls are great except for one detail, when the last character makes their move, you cant redo it. this is a real great game, and i wish the whole world would know this. it is RPG perfection! do you prefer air battles or sword and other weapon battles? I prefer air battles. here are my ratings.
Graphics: 6.5 Dude, the graphics werent the best. Face it. i think the graphics were left untouched from the Dreamcast version. its a classic game so they should keep it like that ^_^
Sound: 9.0 Great sound! i cant say anything else!
Gameplay: 9.5 Great. except for 1 thing, when your last person attacks, you cant remake your decisions. ooh, that is frustrating...
Fun: 10.0 this is a great rpg. who has played this game and not loved it? its great... No its more than great! Soooo muuuuch fuuun...... I love the game!
Originality: 10.0 Have you ever seen a game like this? I didn't think so...
Did you like my ratings? I rated this and now its your turn!
| Best RPG for GC yet... | | Alex from Omaha, USA says (16/Jun/2003): | When I got my NP magazine in the mail, I saw the preview for Skies of Arcadia Legends, and let me tell you, I don't think I have every been so excited about a single game ever. Well, I got the game once it came out, and I was very impressed. The game drew you instantaneously with its exciting beginning. The graphics (though not the best that we have today), get the job done just fine. The sound though is just as good, or even better. The music involves a swash-buckling attitude in it, which allows you to immerse yourself even more into the story. The gameplay in SoAL is magnificent. Controlling Vyse (the main character) is so easy. The controls are straightfoward and not at all complicated. The game includes fighting monsters, looking for treasures, and blowing other ships from the sky. The lifespan of the game is great. It will take at least 40 hours to complete the game barely. Even once you finish, its so fun to go back and complete all the little extra quests. The fun factor is definitely high. Though sometimes the random monster battles can get annoying, the game changes gears so often it keeps you in. The originality gets a 10 easy. Though there might be the same backround story like any RPG game, there has been such a twist on it that you don't notice it at all. The value of this game is unmeasuralbe. It is a great game for any RPG fan. There's action, adventure, mystery, and some great moves to pull off (each character has Super Moves you can earn, and they are easily the coolest moves in the game, especially Vyse's Pirates Wrath)
If anything, check this game out. You'll find out that its definetly more than meets the eye.
| Best RPG since FF7!!!!!! | | A gamer from Texas, USA says (12/Jun/2003): | This is the very best RPG since FF7!The graphics are good for this type of game. And I LOVED that they put it on Gamecube, because I had it for Dreamcast. I got rid of my Dreamcast, and that was the game I missed the most. Its sound is pretty good and if you didn't like it you can turn the volume off They were VERY original. I've never seen anything like this game. It was the price it should've been(49.99).
| Minor improvements since dreamcast, making this a possible final fantasy beater. | | tyrion from UK says (10/Jun/2003): | As in the title i owned this on dreamcast and loved it then, but, alas, dreamcast has been captured by valua and executed in the colleseum. The little improvements go a long way, being able to hunt air pirates on wanted lists improved village details when travelling the skies, and know (apart from finding cham) you have to find moonfish to feed a bird that can sometimes spit up valuable items really early in the game. The sound has improved dramatically aswell, in the dreamcast version the battle music seemed to fade into the backround or make you feel its dragging on (as with some boss music), the music i truely love though is when you are fighting the wind gigas with the delphinus (that really makes you feel like a captain fighting a really powerful enemy).
All in all this game has exceeded almost everyones expectations, definately within a chance of beating final fantasy games.
| An enjoyable game to get in to! | | Andrew from England says (28/May/2003): | So here we have Skies of Arcadia. A top Dreamcast game which I never had the joy in owning. As soon as you put it in you can see that this game just draws you in. The beging is brilliant how it starts with a deck battle! But you feel that from othe gamecube games the graphics are not its high points!
Saying this I slowly got used to it and you can find a solid game with not many faults. The battles are fun using tactics and it makes you feel like a commander, unlike other games. Also it feels fun as well. Some games like Pikmin you find a chore getting all the piesces but with this game you can find fun and enjoyment on all the battles, including the sky battles! Also the design of every island makes you feel like in a magiccal land which to me is great!
So overall I would rate this
Graphics 8/10
Sound 8/10
Ideas 9/10
Lifespan 10/10
Trust me you wont want to stop at some points. Ive stayed up from 10 till 1 sometimes, its that good and it draws you in that much!
| Characters and lots of them!! | | Jack Bentele from Houston,Texas,USA says (30/Apr/2003): | The best part about this game is the characters. The Main good characters are Vyse(Air Pirate),Aika(Air Pirate/Vyse's best friend),Fina(Mysterious girl),Dracma(Salior),Gilder(Air Pirate/Womanizer),and Enrique(prince of Vaula). The Main bad guys are Ramirez(Vice Captin of the Valua Armada),Galican(Captin of Valua Armada),Tendora(Queen of Valua),1st Admiral Alfonso,2nd Admiral Gregorio,3rd Admiral Vigoro(Big Time Womanizer),and 5th Admiral De Loco. The good/bad character is 4th Admiral Belleza. The characters are only one part of this fantastic game. The graphics are a little cheesy but that does not ruin the game. This is definentely the best RPG out there. Buy it!!!!!!!!!!
| Air Pirates, Admirals, and Cannons oh my!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | | A gamer from Houston,Texas,United States of America says (15/Feb/2003): | I love it. It's the most fun game i've ever played. The only part i hate is Bleigok. %$!< remove me > at him. Even if it can get a little boring at times, the cut scences are awsome and the storyline is involving. If you can't buy this game then rent it. If you can't rent this game because of your parents...get it anyway.
| Awesome, awesome, awesome! | | Brian from Cudjoe Key, USA says (9/Feb/2003): | Heh, gamecube has needed a half decent RPG since its release. Matter of fact, this game's entirely decent... and then some!
Meh. some people would instantly dismiss this game as bad because of graphics. ^&$! them! though these graphics are somewhat dated, any true RPG lover like myself wouldn't care, or even notice on the most part. Overworks has pumped some extra polygons into the character models, or so ive heard. Some rough textures can be seen and all, but they won't kill you. Besides, they may not be as up to par as SOFTCORE gamers who only like photorealistic games would like, but the graphics can be quite stunning. (i.e Wevles... thats my fav. spell! then, of course there is also Eternes. that ones cool too.)
As far as sound goes this game is still way up there. none of those boring, monotonous batle themes like in some other rpg's. there are 5 battle themes ive counted, 2 for normal battles (don't let that discourage you, they don't ruin the games experience.) and 3 for boss battles depending on your party's and the boss's state. (the music will sound uhm..."scarier" when one of you is unconcious or about to be, and cheerful and inspiring when YOU'RE healthy...but the same can't be said for the boss...) The SFX really fit whats happening on the screen, as well.
I don't find the lack of voice acting a downside, however an upside. Almost every game that tries to make the lip movements fails miserably and makes it look rediculous. Lets move on to some other aspects, then, shall we? I found but one single downside to this game... it ends! I only just got it on Feb 5, and have been playing it since then. i haven't been able to tear myself away from the truly engrossing story. You're Vyse, a Blue Rougue (Robin Hoods of arcadia, per se') who steal from the rich to help those who need it. particularly a mysterious young girl... Vyse and his close boomeraing-wielding friend, Aika, set out for some harmless fun, and get WAY more then they bargained for...
This is the most fun ive EVER had with ANY game ever. its more than worth the 50 bucks with wich no regrets at all i forked over for this game. Quick, hurry and grab a copy! with that said (maybe too early) i'll give you a run down on the game play. battle is pretty basic, with the added strategy of the spirit bar, which is kind of like a giant spell point system the entire party uses, so you gotta' know what to use and when. The gratifying story, teamed up with still-good graphics and super sound, with the addition of spectacular spells really make this worth picking up. plus you won't get any quiet, ill-tempered characters. (a slight exception is drachma) almost all of the characters in this game are lively, happy people who could write inspirational books. its refreshing! heres a brief summary of what i think:
Graphics: 8
Sound: 9.5
gameplay: 10
Story: 10+
Originality: 8.7
Another thing i'd like to mention about the originality: it gets a great score because of the entire world the game takes place in, plus some interesting transportation methods. (Airships? Count me in!)
overall, this a a basic RPG, Well polished and fleshed over to make a gameplay experience truly worth picking up.
| The Best RPG in a long time! Highly suggested!! | | Nick Prigel from Tampa, FL says (3/Feb/2003): | I was first introduced to Skies of Arcadia from a friend of mine. He brought his Sega Dreamcast over and started to play it. Whoa! This game was cool. I never put it down. The game is so unbelievable addicting is sick. I immediately went out and bought it. I eventually beat it. I started over, but never finished. Then, after GameCube was released, I was herding some rumors on IGN that OverWorks, the developers of SoA, were releasing a sequel to this awesome game. I had to get the facts. It later started to emerge on the GameWatch list at Nintendo Power. I was able to pick up a preview. I read that the game would be the same, but with some additions and new features.
I just bought it for GameCube and I have noticed some new characters and the game has new and better music.
The best thing about this game is, is that even though there is an end to this magnificent role-playing game, it sure will take you a while. That's right, There is over 80 flippin' hours of gameplay to this game, according to the Sega review.
The graphics and overall animation is stunning; better than any Final Fantasy title you can think of. The levels are vast and colorful. Some stages will leave you awe-struck. There is so much to explore and discover. In fact, there are so many side- quests, you might not even finish them. There are also many characters and they all have interesting techniques. It's one of the few RPGs with so much lasting appeal.
The music and sound effects are very impressive. It really makes this game stand out. The battle music is catchy without getting on your last nerve, and the music makes cut scenes cooler. The magic spells have good sound fx to them, also.
The story line is the best. I don't want to ruin it but I'll break it down for ya' if you want to here it. Your a Blue Rogue, sworn to protect the innocent and to fight against the tyranny of the Valuan Empire. You embark on an epic quest across Arcadia's infinite skies to find all the moon stones before the Valuans do so they don't use them to summon great weapons to rule the world.
Like every RPG, there are battles. SoA definitely has something to be proud of. The battle sequences are extraordinary. The game is all about strategy, you gotta' be smart. The special techniques are where the awesome graphics come in. One thing thats kind of a trademark to the game is the unique and original special moves that the characters pull of. They really are power packed.
There is probably one downside that won't bother most people. The entire game is scripted. There is no character speech except for grunts and moans. That's okay of course, considering the depth of the game.
This is one highly recommended game. If you are looking for an excellent RPG that employs strategy, graphics, sound, music, depth, replay, and story line. This is your game. Buy it even if you don't like games like it. If you can't buy it rent it. If you didn't beat it all, rent it again. You... will... LOVE... this... game..!
