Not the best, but not the worst | | Joseph from San Antonio, TX says (17/Jun/2003): | I'm sure everything I'm about to say has already been said, but here goes . . . I'm 25 years old and have been a Zelda player since the 80s. I've played most but not all of the titles, and I have to say Windwaker falls close behind Ocarina, Majora, and, the best, A Link to the Past.
I have no qualms with the graphics. In fact, they help distinguish this particular chapter from the others, and given that Windwaker is set generations after the other Zelda games, it seems logical that he and his world would look different. For example, when you visit Hyrule underwater, the Link statue looks like the old (teenager) Link from OoT. Also, the graphics are some of the most charming I've ever seen in a video game. Bright, vivid colors. Link has a wide range of facial expressions. I love the waves of the ocean and watching the sun rise and set. Light and shadow are rendered superbly. And the game feels as if there is real gravity. When Link falls, he falls fast and hard, as opposed to some games where, if you fall, you practically drift to the ground. When you climb out of water, you remain wet for about a minute: you leave footprints in sand or dirt, and droplets drip from your clothes if you climb a ladder. What's ironic is a lot of people say this game is not realistic, when in fact, because of the light/shadow, gravity, and dry/wet issues, it is very realistic---in a cartoony sort of way.
The music and sound effects are very enjoyable and actually add a cinematic element to the game. When you strike at an enemy, the music strikes a chord, and with each successive blow, the chord rises in pitch. Very original. The score includes some nice Celtic music with nylon guitars and flutes. It would have been nice to FINALLY hear Link, Zelda, and Gannon speak. You only hear them gasp or grunt or laugh. Maybe next time . . .
Playability is half-and-half. Swordplay is easy enough. No real challenging moves or combos. But on the flip side, it gets annoying and interrupts gameplay when you have to go to your inventory and select a new object ESPECIALLY if you're in the middle of a fight. But of course, you did the same in all the other games, so that's a bit unfair to say. Which reminds me. Where are all the neat, original items? You get about as many (and the same) items as you did in Link to the Past, which was for the SUPER NINTENDO! In MM, on the N64, you got all these items PLUS another inventory screen of masks! This is the GameCube! You should be able to have ten times as many items as before! Some should at least be a little different or original. (The grappling hook and telescope are kind of cool, though.) During some levels, you can easily guess which item you will acquire.
So yes, graphics and sound are decent, but where the developers really drop the ball is the game itself. Not only are the graphics, as some would say, "childish," but so are the objectives and puzzles and dungeons and bosses. You get so many hints in this game. If it's not the dragon boat, it's the pirate's jewel or the fish giving you pointers and clues. At least in Metroid Prime you can turn the hints off. Some hints are necessary, but when they reveal EVERYTHING, it starts to ruin the fun. Among the other Zelda titles I mentioned, you use your brain the least during this one. A Link to the Past established all the puzzles used in Windwaker. Lighting torches to open doors, moving objects to rest on switches, etc. Yes, yes, we've seen it before. Bosses are routine, and, in fact, most closely resemble those on LttP (especially the sand serpent). And I may be wrong, but it seems you have fewer temples to go through in Windwaker than ever before. Seven or eight, maybe, and the rest of the time, you're sailing from island to island (which, before you acquire the warp spell, gets very boring). Which brings me to my next point. Again, this is the GameCube. You're out in this sea, which you expect to be vast and full of all these incredible lands. Much to the contrary, the world feels so enclosed and limiting, whereas the world in MM seemed limitless. I could get lost in MM. The islands in Windwaker, on the other hand, are so small it's pathetic. Standing on one side, you could spit to the other. Many of the secret chambers are not so secret as they once were, because they're hiding under the same old boulders. In short (too late), everything that once made the Zelda series original and exciting has become routine and predictable.
If you're new to the series, have fun! But if you've played the others, you will find nothing new. I guess I'm the opposite from everyone else. I loved the graphics and disliked the game. Nintendo will have to do some major brainstroming for the next Zelda title if they hope to keep the series fresh.
| WiKiD | | Zone_Unknown from Adelaide, South Australia says (18/Jun/2004): | Arrite, as someone who first stumbled upon the adventures of link and his quests to save princess zelda and defeat the evil ganon years ago on the snes, and fought his way through Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask - I will admit I was at first deterred from buying WindWaker from first impressions given by the cartoon style graphics I saw on instore advertisements. After playing the game, however, I become completely absorbed by it until I had finished it from beginning to end. The graphics may be a little cartoony but they are great. This graphics engine allows the entire game to run absolutely smoothly and seemlessly. I liked the music, it was good to hear a mix of some of the old and some new tracks. I ended up playing it a second time around about a month after finishing it the first time. The game is full of fun and surprises. The new battle system is a lot better than the old 4 or 5 different sword moves. Now you can deal combos, parry enemy attacks, while still having the ability to whip out your (Oversized) skull hammer and flattening some poor little helpless monster. This new battle style is great, however it does make the monsters extremely easy to kill. If you block and attack and make use of your boomerang and make note of the weaknesses of each monster you can take out room after room after room of them. The boat and sea style of travel instead of ol' Epona is new and exciting. I personally enjoyed sailing around for a while, and when it got boring the ability to warp on the map made up for that. I paid 90 bucks for this game, and i managed to get the storesperson to throw in the masters quest/oot cd. As someone who played and beat ocarina of time once or twice... ok maybe more times lol.. I enjoyed masters quest as most of the dungeons were new and improved.. and slightly harder, but all the bosses and enemies were just as weak as before.. I think it would have been better to chuck a few new enemies in there too. I've noticed a new Zelda coming out late 2005, not sure what its called but it looks like they're going back to the OoT style graphics, but theres a lot of new cool features like the ability to ride your horse past a monster and slice it with your sword as you go by... Anyway I give windwaker a good solid 8 outta 10. I thoroughly enjoyed the game and would recomment it to anyone.
| anon gamer | | A gamer from maine says (24/Jun/2003): | I recently bought and played this game. Beat it in 3 days but put a LOT of hours into it. Id say it maxes out at 40 hours if u dont look anything up. All in all the game was pretty good I liked the sound and music which added the 'zelda appeal'. The gameplay is good you have a lot of freedom in battles like slashing them really fast or stun them with your boomerang or even freeze them with your arrows and smash them with your hammer basically the same old items thats been in every zelda game you still us bombs to blow up strange looking walls... etc... but the boss battles were way to easy in fact the whole game is way to easy i only died once and that was because I couldn't die and i wanted to see what it looks like when he dies. With all the cool battle freedoms and defensive measures such as side stepping and back flip evasions you'd think they would make a use or em the only time u will really use evasions is when fighting the last boss still the freedoms make up for the overall EASY gameplay(sorta). As for the graphics you are in a boat and u sail the sea's the worlds flooded and you gotta go from island to island searching for things I personally love the ocean and i loved the way they made u feel like u were really sailing the sea's and well you guessed it the graphics are done in, cel-shading why did nintendo go toward cel-shading? They are getting lazy with zelda and dont really care? I know alot of you people settle for cel-shading but you guys obviously haven't played metroid prime imagine zelda with graphics like that? Non-childish yet not to violent more character detail an a more in depth story the one thing i never liked about zelda is the lack of past story the hero just appears and kills ganon every game. All in all it wasn't a bad game but nintendo should seriously consider changig where this game is heading or it will die. I have always been a huge zelda fan and own every one of them but after majora's mask my taste for zelda games is dropping. ALSO as for replayability none i have no need to replay that game except maybe to sail around and goof off I suggest you rent it and burn countless hours just to beat it its not worth 50 dollars to buy it.
| Great game, original graphics, great fun | | A gamer from Alabama says (23/Jun/2003): | I've heard all the arguments against WW's cel-shaded graphics. They all say the graphics are "kiddy" or "stupid" or "bad". But really, the graphics are fun to watch. The amount of detail they put in the game is absolutely incredible. When Link comes out of water, he drips water for a little while. The facial expressions are incredible varied. When Link sidles along a wall, he raises one eyebrows and squints the other eyes, while looking in the way he's moving. I especially enjoyed how animated the Enemies were. Bokoblins (for you who haven't played the game yet, they're annoying imps, they pop up pretty often, and they get annoying) will sometimes cling to the edge of a platform if you knock them off, and then they'll scrabble frantically to get back on. Moblins (ever seen orcs depicted as men with pig-like faces? There you go, then) will do a take when they see you. If you sneak up behind one and stab him in the rear, he'll dance around madly with tears squirting from his eyes, anime-style. And that's just a few of the ways you can interact with enemies.
The side-quests take quite a while...44 Heart Pieces, 100-and-some-odd figurines (that's the killer one right there, the trading quest...they take quite a while. Anyway, the game has a decent amount of replay value, what with the second-playthrough (which has more "fun" changes than any major item location or plot changes.)
This game proves that a game doesn't need to have blood'n'gore, swearing, or naked fish-ladies to be a good game. Yes, many of the bosses have some sort of element based on a boss from an earlier game, although most of the bosses with references to earlier LoZ game have only a superficial resemblance to their predecessors. For example, there's a boss named Gohma. But it's more like a fire-scorpion-centipede-THING and it does NOT (underline, underline) crap out smaller versions of itself. (Thankfully!)
I highly recommend this game. Be warned, though! If you play the OoT Bonus Disc after playing this game for total of couple of hours, you'll be wanting to scream in frustration at the graphics.
| better than i thought | | A gamer from new york, usa says (4/Jul/2003): | when i first saw pic of the new zelda for gc(not the cel-shaded ones) i almost messed my pants. it looked so incredibly, and i couldnt wait for it. then when i saw the new version i almost cried. in the pictures it looked awful, i hated it, i told myself i wouldnt get it, but as the zelda freak i am i did. and boy am i glad i did. i soon found that the part i hated, the graphics, was the best part of this game. this is by far, the most graphically incerdibly game to ever hit the shelves, arcades, whatever, it has way better graphics than any game out. the frame rate is far smoother than any game, movie, cartoon, anything, absolutely incredible. the lighting effects are amazing, the red tint of a lava filled room add to the amazing graphics. the coolest part though, and the reason for the cel-shading are the facial expressions. the are hilarious. like all zelda games, wind waker controls perfecly, no surprise there, but in battle the camera can sometimes go insane. but other than that it controls well. also, the dungeons are laid out brilliantly, and house some cool new weapons and enemies. despite all the greatness, this game is different from other zelda games, how? it has a few flaws. first off, the new world is not as good as hyrule or termina, boating is fun, but tiresome. also, what happened to ganon?!?!? he desperatly needs to go on a diet. looks like he pigged out in the darkworld. another somewhat tiresome thing is triforce hunting. its fun at first but eventually it gets on your nerves. one thing that previous zeldas(especially majoras mask) did was create a mood, wind waker doesnt do that. i dont know if it is the cel-shading, the music or what but it doesnt do it. it doesnt quite feel like a zelda game. yeah, it has its flaws, and it may not feel like a zelda game, but it is, and as we all know, zelda is the best. it does have its downs, but overall, it lives good on zeldas legacy, another great game added to the list.
| charts, treasures and maps should be all updated as you play | | A gamer from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia says (16/Dec/2004): | I'm a 48year old female mum who loves Zelda. I used to get my son to do the bosses, but I can now do them myself. I love the game but found the sailing boring. I also prefer to have target numbers of treasures to find, after finding the 40th treasure chest in a row with a jewel has no meaning when your wallet is full and there seems to be a limitless supply of chests to find. If you knew there were 200 or whatever and you'd only found 150 or 15 of the 20 in an area then the 40th in a row would still be ok within the bigger picture. The same with the charts, finding a heart chart is terrific except that half way through the game when you have found many hearts already, makes these charts useless because you don't know which ones you've already done. Especially for me as I often forget. (I did say I was 48 didn't I). I have found all shards, got the light arrow, completed most islands, platforms, submarines, and all temples. I am missing about 5 treasure maps that I'm still looking for and have most figurines. I think I need two more hearts but who knows as there is no reference to find out. I've just got two less than the top row.
If you could see how badly I play ---- this is some feat. My son is always laughing at me as I fall off platforms and misjudge leaps. My arm currently hurts from playing and I dream most nights of needing to find something else in my distorted Zelda dreams. I love flying as a seagull and spent ages flying until I felt like 'I' was really flying. What I really love about games is that although when playing you know that it is only a game, six months later my memories of being in game worlds are identical to my memories of being in the real world.
I love finding things, the puzzles and exploring more than the fighting but there is some satisfaction when you finally beat a difficult monster.
| This game is so FREAKIN' AWESOME! | | Dak Kaliero from Virgina, USA says (31/Mar/2003): | This has got to be THE best game for the GC so far! Let's go through it systematically to show this absolute FACT: Graphics: The only people who say the graphics sux are those who haven't played the game. These graphics INCREASE the look, not degrade it! Just look at the expressions that Link and the other characters show! Graphics get a 10 from me. Sound: Another great acheivement from the Zelda Series. Listen to the sound while on the beach of an island. You here the lapping of the waves, the gentle whistle of the wind, the creak of your boat, all backed up by background music that sets the perfect mood. Again, no voice acting, but that's in the spirit of the series. Sound is another perfect 10. Gameplay: Excellent. Controls are easy to learn, easy to use, like the rest of the Zelda series. The parry attack is particularly amazing! Only difficult thing in this area is accidentally throwing enemy weapons. Gameplay is 9.9. Length: LONG. It is still at least 9 hours long just straightfoward. But earning every powerup and extra increases it to around 20! I like long games, so another 10. Fun Factor: Excellent. Incredibly fun to play, especially when they create humor in the midst of a tough battle. (Example: I thrust at a Moblin from behind. It dropped its spear and ran around holding its rear end.) The look, inspired by Manja comics in Japan, increase the fun to a 10. Originality: The story is brand new and sucks you in, despite the cheesy beginning. The characters add plenty of originality, revealing a little (or a lot of) personality in every character. Another perfect 10. Overall score: about ten thousand, but the reveiw only lets me go up to ten.
| The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker | | Ralph C from Waltham Massachuesetts USA says (4/Mar/2003): | The Legend has to be the freshes and the hottest game out there everwhere u look there will be comments that the graphics are horrible. Excuse me let me ask u a question where in the world have u seen cel shading graphics like that. Hmmmm let me think no where stupid. Anyways it does matter what they say the facts are that this games is extremly addictive and very very unique and no another game matches its flavor. If u want to be another same old fanal fansty story go buy Ps2 or worst yet the so called "All might Xbox" wow three great games. If u want a game that will go down in history and sell a million Nintendo has what your looking for.I personally think the graphics are sick and i haven't seen anything that mathces it yet. One more question beside the graphics what is wrong with the game, although as i said before the graphics are unbelivable crisp, smooth, and fresh. It's like watching a disney slash anime movie in one, with a story only Lord of the rings could match. If u don't belive me why is everyone write about it because zelda is the best series every made. Yet most people are two face all talk on the computer but when it comes down to it they're gonna buy it anyways. But what can i say this game is sick and rightfully deserves a perfect 10. P.S. did i mention that in Japan the game got a perfect prior to the wind waker only 3 other games had gotten a perfect ten. Guess what the last game to get it was........ yeah that right Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time. Yeah and 1 what now got anymore to say haters. Just Bring it.
| The best (Not bloody and violent) game ever! | | A gamer from Edmonton, Alberta Canada says (30/Jan/2004): | I play OoT and I thought gaming couldn't get any better then Majora's Mask came out and I thought it was too short not as good as OoT. Then I heard about Zelda Wind Waker and I said "Mom, I've got to get this game." Unfortunatly I didn't get OoT Master Quest (I wish I had) but I got Wind Waker and It was the best game in the Legend of Zelda series. It's really a kids game no blood no violence, harsh language, and its got sweet graphics. I thought I wouldn't like it but when i tried it I literally stayed up all night to play it. It is better than OoT. And OoT was pretty good. There is some music i remember from OoT like when you use the cyclone it sounds like when you teleport (maybe this is on MM but i'm not sure). And the story is awsome *Ganondorf rise from the Sacred Realm*. This game is good in everything! Not too much violence but just enough that it's a good game (which there is little violence). I would recomend this to anyone who hasn't played Zelda before (which is impossible). I like the sailing and the evil guys the sailing is so realistc unexpected storms or giant octos and the seagulls and the evil guys are cool hogs or birds or evil wizards who cares what they are they are just cool all the different kinds. I always will go back and go over all the memories: beating Ganon and the skultulas or the heart pieces I haven't even finished OoT yet or MM come to think of it. I'm only 11 so i can't pay for bills or for the games thank god for parents :). They really need and Zelda show. Do you know how good that would be!?
| better than i thought | | David from Texas, USA says (6/Jun/2003): | The game is pretty good but I have to say it could have been better. I was one of those people who thought that the graphics were going to mess up the game but the graphics fit the game perfectly. In other words I have no complants about the graphics. The game itself is way too easy and should have been alot more difficult. I died only once in the entire game. The bosess were too easy and for that matter the levels were too easy. Even the final boss was just as easy as the first. In short There's not much of a challenge in the whole game. The new attacks link had were alot better because they had some pattern to learn rather than random swinging like in the old games. However the sailing gets a little repetitive and boring after a while but that was still a great idea. The story line was really cool and I thought they did a great job at that. They didn't have enough sub quests and the ones they had were pretty short. They needed sub quests like in majora's mask. What gets me most is that it's like no one from any island really knows about any danger or for that matter really cares except for a few. There's no big danger much of any where and its like after you save your sister there's no point because your actions mean nothing to the islands. I know this sorta sounds evil or something but they should have added death and destruction to the islands. It would have made it seem like you were fighting for a very good cause, like in the other games. Other than that the game was pretty damn good.
| Zelda... is Zelda... is Zelda | | grif from New York, USA says (19/Jun/2003): | There are two kinds of people in this world--those who think Zelda's radical, new toon-shaded style is a brilliant move, and those who think its bug-eyed characters belong in cheesy '70s-era cartoons, not in a videogame for adults. But I got news for people in the second group, you've got to play it to believe it!! When I first found out about the new cel-shading I was a little surprised but once you start playing the game you don't even realize that the graphics are different. All you know is that it looks great and its fun to play. Unfortunately this game isn't as ground breaking as the greatest Zelda game and arguably the best game of all time, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, but Oot is hard a hard game to beat. There are only a few problems with the game: it's length and it's items. Windwaker has exactly 6 total dugeaons. These dungeons each require special items to get to the boss( like in all Zelda games). It took me about 20 hours to get everything in the game. Oot had 9 dungeons to beat, legend of zelda: a link to the past had about 11 dungeons and legend of Zelda: Majora's mask had 5 dungeons. Windwaker was a little bit to short but so was Majora's mask. The only other problem is the items. They put link with almost exactly the same items with a few exceptions. Over-all this game had an engrossing story-line (as do all Zelda games) and it was as fun to play as it is to watch.
| Are you a TRUE Zelda Fan? | | Mark Gallow says (1/Dec/2003): | Come on People! You call yourselves Zelda fans? It is a well known fact humans hate change it is just a psychologicall thing, So CHOOSE to enjoy the graphics, I did some research into why they chose those type of graphics and they said if you have a realaistic chacrter running around things or beeing able to do unrealistic moves it takes some of the fun or purpose of what zelda was meant to be. So ENJOY the graphics, yes i admit it was a shock for me to but i chose to look on the bright side now can't picture them without it, stop comapareing to fully realism to cartoon there is a purpose to the cartoony look, realism face it you can do more or get drawn into the game more cause a cartoon doing mad HUGE things that a realistic looking charcter would look outa place doing, so the realsim aspect of the game is put into play so Quit the whineing about the Graphics! If you were a REAL Zelda fan you will stick by Zelda no matter what the changes, Like a true fan going for there faviroute team even through the changes or losses, This is just a simple change, choose to look at it for the better not the worste. Only you can choose to enjoy it! I love this game, the graphics are realistic to the movment of Link, the sound is crisp and clean, the gameplay smooth, and the game length allthough a bit short don't rush the game choose to roleplay run around the island pretending your looking for shells
| This game is really cool! YEAH! | | Angus Newhouse from Kennewick USA says (29/Nov/2003): | When this game first came out I didn't know what to expect of it. I was thinking about preordering it and stuff but I decided not to. I first played it about three months after it came out. I started playing and found that it was rather addicting to play. Then I played it nearly non-stop for five days until I had finished. The entire adventure is so much fun to play. THe controls are pretty simple and it is really fun to fight hordes of enemies. Once you get all of your Items it get's really really fun to fight hordes of enemies. But with how huge this game was, it was easy for me to play it that much. I mean, come on. They have an entire ocean, islands, huge islands and ships on the water. And the game still goes way beyond that. There are lots of weapons at your disposal as well. The graphics are cel shaded. At first I didn't think I would like this. But after a while I got to liking it. And they are really nice graphics. The game also has good music. What I really like about it is how it is like five differant ganres of games. Action, adventure, rpg, puzzle and platform. These all fit into this game. The one thing I didn't like about it was the lack of stuff that happens once you beat the game. Nothing really happens. You just start over in your normal clothes and with a color picto box. Nothing special. But yes, I strongly reccomend ths game. It Rocks!
| Legends Never Die!!! | | A gamer from New York , US says (12/Jul/2003): | When I first saw the graphics for the new Zelda game I almost died when I saw Link fighting Ganon. But then I saw the real pics. I almost died again, this time of sadness. I could not believe what they had done to it and swore not to buy it. But pretty soon I felt it was Zelda so I bought it. And it turns out that it was awesome! The toon graphics make it seem like an anime and gives better facial expresions. I always laugh at the faces when they do something(if you dont you have no humor). The new ability to pick up enemies weapons was genius. and the new character Tetra has become one of my fav all time Zelda characters. The story is incredibly well done and so are the dungeons. Though sadly, the dungeons dont add as great a challenge as past games. And Triforce hunting was very fun but got tiresome. Plus the easy temples make the game short. But the cutscemes are awesome. Especially the ones after beating Forsaken Fortress the second time. Also the enemies do almost no damage at all. Even bosses do as much as one heart. Speaking of bossesthey aren't given names like in ocarina. And finally...what did Ganon do!? Did he eat Robotnik or something? To take over Hyrule he just has to roll over it! Plus his laugh sounds like a strangled turkey. Though I respect the changes and nonetheless give this game a perfect rating.
P.S.Im not kidding, he's HUGE!!!
| Zelda | | Justin from USA says (15/Nov/2003): | I still love Zelda the same way I did when playing my all time favorite Ocrina of Time. It rules and the graphics got me at fore. I love it's new style. I was blown away at the fore-shadowing they put in the game it's just amazing. It's like watching a splint sceen the whole time playing. So great. Sure I'm going to miss the old graphics but I can get over it.
The story-line is still worth while and follows the segal of the two on N64. The fighting is also better with great new moves.
The new thing that I so much like on this game is that sailing. Man it is so real. Where the wind blows you follow cause you are moving by sail. So instead of a horse you have a talking boat. Yeah you miss the horse but it's not like a horse can swim and the boat is so much fun. The sea is huge!! You can just travel and travel the sea, even get lost, if not careful. But thats when the map comes in handy. Island to Island there is a tone of extra mini quest you could do If you want to.
This game is also very long. So prepare to learn new things. I can't wait for the next Zelda. This is still my favorite of all games.
Any Zelda fan not willing to buy this game because of a simple thing like graphics is a fool!
And if you never played Zelda before and like to get your complete moneys worth out of games. THIS IS THE GAME TO START WITH.
| The Hookshot isn't only for Monsters... | | Saiyamoru from Huntsville, Alabama, USA says (22/Mar/2004): | O____O The first game that forced me to become a Gamecube zombie. I haven't finished it all yet--how d'you kill those dratted Floormasters?!?--but it is VERY promising. And for those people who think this is too short and the graphics are bad...*growls* In Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons, they had only EIGHT dungeons and at least the graphics were in color, but that's all I can say for IT...AND I STILL WORSHIPED IT!!! *bows to her Zelda Shrine decked out with Hero's Flags.* One of the good things I liked about this game was even if I chickened out and ran off to hide from the scary temples, there was still LOADS of stuff to do...upgrade poor Zunari's shop, catch the thieving rich-turned-poor girl and tease her to absolute DEATH ((By the way, if you don't feel like impersonating a kitty throughout the entire chase, you can simply hide behind the wall beside the coffee shop and wait for her to pass by, then run in after her and catch her thinking greedy thoughts while rummaging through ole Zunari's safe.)), deliver the cannabalistic Moe's letter to Maggie--I really pitied that poor girl when she read Moe's letter aloud, catch Killer Bees, babysit the three little pigs for the sailor...*sniff* If this game is excellent for me, I need to get Orcarina of Time and see what's so great about the game everyone is comparing it to!
| Great Gameplay, Bad Storyline | | T-Force Seeker from Vallejo,USA says (10/Aug/2003): | When I first heard the prologue of the game I thought it was okay, but as you go through the game it starts to suck. Since Link is gone I'm thinking he's wupping on Majora somewhere in Termina. So this new kid (the hero in The Wind Waker) fishes for pieces of the triforce and gains the same exact triforce piece that Link has. How the fruit-cake did that happen? Just because Link walks through a portal to Termina dosen't mean his triforce piece flew off of his hand and exploded over the Great Sea. And another thing. The Master Sword chooses the someone to be the hero of Hyrule or something right? And whoever that someone is, (Link) is the only one who can pull the Master Sword out. So how does some kid just pull it out if Link already did? And why didn't the Master Sword knock out the new kid for seven years like it did to Link? They look the same age don't they? And how did Zelda become a pirate? But, it's fun. The game play is great. You can dodge and hit and you get cool weapons. I'm a big fan of the Zelda series but the game sort'a scrambles the entire Zeld story line.
Over all it's still a great game. I just hope Nintendo comes out with a Zelda game with a better storyline. I still think it's worth buying.
P.S. If you didn't understand some of this ,then play Ocorina of Time and Majora's Mask.
| pleasantly surprised | | Isaac Cubefan from Elkton,Maryland,USA says (25/Jun/2003): | I've played the other Zelda games and with half a brain you could have figured out all the dungeons (with the exception of ocarina of time's water temple) but this one's different. In the earth temple light puzzles especially it takes a crapload of brainpower to solve. One thing i don't get though is why the the sages changed their names from Rudo and Saria to Laredo and Fador.Being an oot patron i know their names. It's good to have our old villain back. I mean that Majora character was LAME!!! His second form runs around the a headless chicken and sounds like one too! Ganondorf has been the bad guy in every Zelda game except Majora's Mask. It stinks that you only have the light arrows for two minutes before zelda takes them and uses them on Ganon. The Spoils items are a nice touch especially cuz the skull necklaces which i got 67 of in my second trip to the forsaken fortress can make you 50 rupees for three of them. Most of all i love Link's parry attack it can kill one of those stupid lava bugs in one hit. Little hint. kill the giant moth with one fire arrow. It's cool that you have the grappling hook and the hookshot together and cooler still that the new sages help you in the temples. I wish they could kill the stupid Floormasters though instead of getting grabbed by them every 3 seconds.
| not oot but beetter than anything else | | A gamer from Anytown, USA says (22/Jun/2003): | At first i thought the graphics were a bit odd but when i played the game for the first time is was great. I wished there were more dungeons but there were so many sidequests and inbetween dungeon stuff it almost made up for it. they needed some more classic zelda music but the new music wasnt bad. The huge ocean was great to explore expecially since each of the 40 islands had something you could do there whether it was finding 20 rupees or a triforce chart. I am glad they did NOT use voice acting because i dont think they could get a voice to match with the hi-ya sounds like makes when he rolls and attacks. It was awsome double teaming ganon with Zelda and having a sword fight instead of playing tennis with him (that got so annoying in oot) . As usual they had a great mix of action and puzzles unlike some games that use no thinking or all thinking, sadly i think the guideline says a cant use any of my examples. This game is the only other priceless object than the Mona Lise (hint buy it whatever the cost). My favorite weopon had to be the bow even though its in every game but sadly there wasnt a single archery range in the entire game!!! all we got was a battleship game! Hopefully they will use the spaceworld graphics in the next zelda game and keep the deku leaf it was pointless yet fun!
| The Legend reawakens | | James (Bov) Bovington from Hudderfield, England says (24/Nov/2003): | How to elaborate 'This is a great game' into the two hundred word minimum? For that is all that is truly needed to describe this masterpiece of gaming fun.
Technically (groan) this is an excellent piece of work, it runs quickly with no visible slowdown no matter how much is going on on screen. The cell shaded graphics, although despised by some and loved by others, like marmite, really add a sort of depth to the game and belive me, when your playing you wont care about the graphics one jolt. The sound in Wind Waker is great, and although there is no voice acting as such, the music really sets the scene.
One gripe about the gameplay is the long periods of time spent sailing to and from the various different islands, and as sea tends to all look the same, these parts can get slightly tedious.
The characters are memorable personalities and although the Link in this game isn't the same as the one in Ocarina of Time or Majoras Mask, he remains on the same basis in terms of personality, strengths and weaknesses.
So, this is an amazing game that any true Nintendo fan worth their salt will own, and despite the tinyest of flaws, the long periods at sea, some of the dungeons are a bit samey, remains a terrific game with a good story and plenty of side quests to keep you busy.
Have fun!
