better than i thought | | A gamer from new york, usa says (4/Jul/2003): | when i first saw pic of the new zelda for gc(not the cel-shaded ones) i almost messed my pants. it looked so incredibly, and i couldnt wait for it. then when i saw the new version i almost cried. in the pictures it looked awful, i hated it, i told myself i wouldnt get it, but as the zelda freak i am i did. and boy am i glad i did. i soon found that the part i hated, the graphics, was the best part of this game. this is by far, the most graphically incerdibly game to ever hit the shelves, arcades, whatever, it has way better graphics than any game out. the frame rate is far smoother than any game, movie, cartoon, anything, absolutely incredible. the lighting effects are amazing, the red tint of a lava filled room add to the amazing graphics. the coolest part though, and the reason for the cel-shading are the facial expressions. the are hilarious. like all zelda games, wind waker controls perfecly, no surprise there, but in battle the camera can sometimes go insane. but other than that it controls well. also, the dungeons are laid out brilliantly, and house some cool new weapons and enemies. despite all the greatness, this game is different from other zelda games, how? it has a few flaws. first off, the new world is not as good as hyrule or termina, boating is fun, but tiresome. also, what happened to ganon?!?!? he desperatly needs to go on a diet. looks like he pigged out in the darkworld. another somewhat tiresome thing is triforce hunting. its fun at first but eventually it gets on your nerves. one thing that previous zeldas(especially majoras mask) did was create a mood, wind waker doesnt do that. i dont know if it is the cel-shading, the music or what but it doesnt do it. it doesnt quite feel like a zelda game. yeah, it has its flaws, and it may not feel like a zelda game, but it is, and as we all know, zelda is the best. it does have its downs, but overall, it lives good on zeldas legacy, another great game added to the list.
| Worst Zelda Game Ever! | | A gamer from Grand-Rapids, USA says (3/Jul/2003): | This is the worst Zelda game ever. First of all the graphics are worst then i expected, and i really didnt expect much. Second of all, sailing was the gayest thing i've ever had to do in a Zelda game. The story was ok, but really predictable in some places. They could have made the game a lot harder. I almost fell asleep in the few dungeons they had. The combos in swordfightings are the only thing they improved from ocarina of time. The music was annoying after a while that i played the game on mute. The only time i played it was when my x-box was being used by my bro and i couldnt play. I did not get hooked on the game at all. I would only reccomend this game to people that don't have a life and are completly hooked on zelda games. Sure some people will argue with me that this game rocks(see most posted reviews above) but overall this game was short, boring, repetative, easy, and dull.
| INCREDIBLE,AMAZING,STUPENDOUS not to mention cool... | | Josh F. from Stanfield N.C USA says (2/Jul/2003): | i have been a zelda fan since i wuz 3 so i wuz really anticipating this one. i saw the first preview of it in a magazine and when i saw the graphics my whole zelda world crashed before me. i later saw it in another magazine and was thrilled at what i saw.this game is THE BEEEESSST.it is the most realistic game i ever played.the graphics are cartoony but the rest is real time. while yer sailin' a storm can brew up and pour a torrent of rain on your head or give you a 3 second shower, you can sever ropes with a stray arrow or an accidental sword slash.when i first got the game i played it non stop and beat it in 4 days but dont go on thinking its easy.a complex arrangement of puzzles await in every dungeon and at the end theres a boss that towers over link.overall i think this is a phenominal game, the movement is great and the expressions are incredible, i just hate that i waited 3 years for it and beat it in 4 days but it still deserves a full 10
| The best game ever!! | | Darcy London from Learmonth, Victoria, Australia says (1/Jul/2003): | Throghout the years, man has invented some fun things. The Zelda series is one of the 8, now 9 wonders of the world. This is a very fun game and easy to understand. If you have a gamecube but don't have this game GET IT!! this is every gamers dream. It is lively and full of colour and never bores you. I have only had this game for a month or so and I have beaten it twice! ( pretty good considering that my mum and dad insist I go outside for a while and how big it is) Anyway, the story is that a legend in a distant land wearing a green tunic always banishes evil whenever it appears. Ganon, as usual. The main thing that you're doing is going around gathering enough power to banish evil once more. All in all, better than any Xbox and PS2 game you'll ever come across. Well recommended by me.
| Not Bad, Not Great | | Mark from Edmonton,Alberta (Canada) says (1/Jul/2003): | I had very low expectations for this game, mainly because of the graphics. When I played it, I thought it was terrible at first. But by the time I got to the Rito level, I realized that it is an okay game. The graphics however made me dislike the game. I do not loke the cell shaded graphics one bit! I couldn't stand playing very long, because of the terible graphics! If there was different graphics, I'd give the game an 8 and maybe actually want to finish the game.
| Fantastic! | | Ben from Australia says (28/Jun/2003): | The Legend of Zelda: the wind waker is the BEST Platform game Ever to grace this earth! The amount of levels in the game is great, and the final fight with Ganon is splendid! Hint: if you want wasy Spoils from Enemies, just use the Grappling Hook on them! Great for Knights crests and Joy Pendants!
| The greatest game in our time | | Harry Fleetwood from England says (26/Jun/2003): | The legend of zelda is a truly amazing game. With it being a follow on of the orcarina of time it has managed to make it self just as good. The sounds are beutiful on each island and in the ocean and the graphics are amazing so i give this game 10/10.
| THE BEST GAME EVER | | David from niagara falls canada says (25/Jun/2003): | i think that the legend of zelda the wind waker is the best because you get new things and you get to fight lots of bad guys i bought it for my brithday and i loved the game. and i like the way they made the game its a cartoon its a cool change.
| pleasantly surprised | | Isaac Cubefan from Elkton,Maryland,USA says (25/Jun/2003): | I've played the other Zelda games and with half a brain you could have figured out all the dungeons (with the exception of ocarina of time's water temple) but this one's different. In the earth temple light puzzles especially it takes a crapload of brainpower to solve. One thing i don't get though is why the the sages changed their names from Rudo and Saria to Laredo and Fador.Being an oot patron i know their names. It's good to have our old villain back. I mean that Majora character was LAME!!! His second form runs around the a headless chicken and sounds like one too! Ganondorf has been the bad guy in every Zelda game except Majora's Mask. It stinks that you only have the light arrows for two minutes before zelda takes them and uses them on Ganon. The Spoils items are a nice touch especially cuz the skull necklaces which i got 67 of in my second trip to the forsaken fortress can make you 50 rupees for three of them. Most of all i love Link's parry attack it can kill one of those stupid lava bugs in one hit. Little hint. kill the giant moth with one fire arrow. It's cool that you have the grappling hook and the hookshot together and cooler still that the new sages help you in the temples. I wish they could kill the stupid Floormasters though instead of getting grabbed by them every 3 seconds.
| sorry xbox and ps2 owners.... | | CCE-initials from San Diego says (25/Jun/2003): | this game was downsized by ps2 owners because they were pissed off because they under rated the gamecube and now it has the best new game out, zelda the legend of the windwaker. I have a ps2, and the only game i could really get into was Grand theft auto, a really great game. People say that the graphics on the new zelda game are bad(mostly people who dont have a gamecube) and i cant understand why. I played Ocarina of Time, then played Windwaker, and the graphics in a way look the same except the windwaker's look more colorful and in depth. I am a new cube owner, and been saving up for months to get my free game with it, i chose zelda , of course, and i was not dissapointed. It gives you that same zelda mood in an entirely different setting. i am not entirely through with the game, becasue i am stuck in a spot where im relaying from island to island trying to get stuff that i cant get because i freeze or burn.....BUT THIS GAME GETS ALL THE STARS AND IF YOU THINK YOU ARE A ZELDA FAN>>>BUY THiS GAME...its not that easy, but it is that fun.
| anon gamer | | A gamer from maine says (24/Jun/2003): | I recently bought and played this game. Beat it in 3 days but put a LOT of hours into it. Id say it maxes out at 40 hours if u dont look anything up. All in all the game was pretty good I liked the sound and music which added the 'zelda appeal'. The gameplay is good you have a lot of freedom in battles like slashing them really fast or stun them with your boomerang or even freeze them with your arrows and smash them with your hammer basically the same old items thats been in every zelda game you still us bombs to blow up strange looking walls... etc... but the boss battles were way to easy in fact the whole game is way to easy i only died once and that was because I couldn't die and i wanted to see what it looks like when he dies. With all the cool battle freedoms and defensive measures such as side stepping and back flip evasions you'd think they would make a use or em the only time u will really use evasions is when fighting the last boss still the freedoms make up for the overall EASY gameplay(sorta). As for the graphics you are in a boat and u sail the sea's the worlds flooded and you gotta go from island to island searching for things I personally love the ocean and i loved the way they made u feel like u were really sailing the sea's and well you guessed it the graphics are done in, cel-shading why did nintendo go toward cel-shading? They are getting lazy with zelda and dont really care? I know alot of you people settle for cel-shading but you guys obviously haven't played metroid prime imagine zelda with graphics like that? Non-childish yet not to violent more character detail an a more in depth story the one thing i never liked about zelda is the lack of past story the hero just appears and kills ganon every game. All in all it wasn't a bad game but nintendo should seriously consider changig where this game is heading or it will die. I have always been a huge zelda fan and own every one of them but after majora's mask my taste for zelda games is dropping. ALSO as for replayability none i have no need to replay that game except maybe to sail around and goof off I suggest you rent it and burn countless hours just to beat it its not worth 50 dollars to buy it.
| SUPER EXTENSIVE | | Melikevideogames from Cannon Beach, Oregon, USA says (24/Jun/2003): | Nintendo, all I have to say to you is, WOW! You guys have REALLY outdone yourselves this time! There might not be very many levels, but the sidequests are MASSIVE! I have yet to master them all, but I've already beaten the game! However, I suggest you cut down on the difficulty. It's practically impossible for me to get past The Savage Labryinth, or break the flight record at the Flight Control Platform island. Furthermore, I think the snake phase of the battle with Puppet Ganon was a bit TOO chaotic. Enough said. The graphics were unbelievable, and you guys did a TERRIFIC job on the shadowing. I'd have to say that the levels in this game were very creative, and unique from each other. I really liked the effects you guys put on the music for the carbon copies of previous bosses at Ganon's Tower. In short, your job was unbelievable.
| Great game, original graphics, great fun | | A gamer from Alabama says (23/Jun/2003): | I've heard all the arguments against WW's cel-shaded graphics. They all say the graphics are "kiddy" or "stupid" or "bad". But really, the graphics are fun to watch. The amount of detail they put in the game is absolutely incredible. When Link comes out of water, he drips water for a little while. The facial expressions are incredible varied. When Link sidles along a wall, he raises one eyebrows and squints the other eyes, while looking in the way he's moving. I especially enjoyed how animated the Enemies were. Bokoblins (for you who haven't played the game yet, they're annoying imps, they pop up pretty often, and they get annoying) will sometimes cling to the edge of a platform if you knock them off, and then they'll scrabble frantically to get back on. Moblins (ever seen orcs depicted as men with pig-like faces? There you go, then) will do a take when they see you. If you sneak up behind one and stab him in the rear, he'll dance around madly with tears squirting from his eyes, anime-style. And that's just a few of the ways you can interact with enemies.
The side-quests take quite a while...44 Heart Pieces, 100-and-some-odd figurines (that's the killer one right there, the trading quest...they take quite a while. Anyway, the game has a decent amount of replay value, what with the second-playthrough (which has more "fun" changes than any major item location or plot changes.)
This game proves that a game doesn't need to have blood'n'gore, swearing, or naked fish-ladies to be a good game. Yes, many of the bosses have some sort of element based on a boss from an earlier game, although most of the bosses with references to earlier LoZ game have only a superficial resemblance to their predecessors. For example, there's a boss named Gohma. But it's more like a fire-scorpion-centipede-THING and it does NOT (underline, underline) crap out smaller versions of itself. (Thankfully!)
I highly recommend this game. Be warned, though! If you play the OoT Bonus Disc after playing this game for total of couple of hours, you'll be wanting to scream in frustration at the graphics.
| not oot but beetter than anything else | | A gamer from Anytown, USA says (22/Jun/2003): | At first i thought the graphics were a bit odd but when i played the game for the first time is was great. I wished there were more dungeons but there were so many sidequests and inbetween dungeon stuff it almost made up for it. they needed some more classic zelda music but the new music wasnt bad. The huge ocean was great to explore expecially since each of the 40 islands had something you could do there whether it was finding 20 rupees or a triforce chart. I am glad they did NOT use voice acting because i dont think they could get a voice to match with the hi-ya sounds like makes when he rolls and attacks. It was awsome double teaming ganon with Zelda and having a sword fight instead of playing tennis with him (that got so annoying in oot) . As usual they had a great mix of action and puzzles unlike some games that use no thinking or all thinking, sadly i think the guideline says a cant use any of my examples. This game is the only other priceless object than the Mona Lise (hint buy it whatever the cost). My favorite weopon had to be the bow even though its in every game but sadly there wasnt a single archery range in the entire game!!! all we got was a battleship game! Hopefully they will use the spaceworld graphics in the next zelda game and keep the deku leaf it was pointless yet fun!
| Most of what i expected. | | BMXer from Seattle says (20/Jun/2003): | I'll admit, I wasnt so exited about the new graphics but they came through and I think its great. This is the most addictive Zelda game yet. Thats because its the easiest one, but who cares! Im still gawing over some of the graphics and the story is simply enchanting. Im mean, when you find out the the pirate is Princess Zelda, the twist and the cutscene graphics which by the way were gameplay graphics were AWESOME.The only problem I have with the game, thus the 9 out of 10 is the length of the game.Ocarina of Times was long and enjoyable, this is extended and enjoyable. But I Luv it and cant wait till the next Zelda game.
| Why Ganon, why Tetra? | | Sara Brockman from Tucson Az, usa says (20/Jun/2003): | I loved the alot untill i got to Ganon. not only did he some how break out of the seal because nintendo couldn't think of any one else but he some sort of puppit. then p. zelda kills him. P.zelda is also a non important charicter who becomes zelda. My other complaints are there are only two sages, you are not the hero of time but you find all the shards of the triforce and become the hero of time, and you have to sail every where until you get a bow. But over all i liked it alot
| Zelda... is Zelda... is Zelda | | grif from New York, USA says (19/Jun/2003): | There are two kinds of people in this world--those who think Zelda's radical, new toon-shaded style is a brilliant move, and those who think its bug-eyed characters belong in cheesy '70s-era cartoons, not in a videogame for adults. But I got news for people in the second group, you've got to play it to believe it!! When I first found out about the new cel-shading I was a little surprised but once you start playing the game you don't even realize that the graphics are different. All you know is that it looks great and its fun to play. Unfortunately this game isn't as ground breaking as the greatest Zelda game and arguably the best game of all time, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, but Oot is hard a hard game to beat. There are only a few problems with the game: it's length and it's items. Windwaker has exactly 6 total dugeaons. These dungeons each require special items to get to the boss( like in all Zelda games). It took me about 20 hours to get everything in the game. Oot had 9 dungeons to beat, legend of zelda: a link to the past had about 11 dungeons and legend of Zelda: Majora's mask had 5 dungeons. Windwaker was a little bit to short but so was Majora's mask. The only other problem is the items. They put link with almost exactly the same items with a few exceptions. Over-all this game had an engrossing story-line (as do all Zelda games) and it was as fun to play as it is to watch.
| ;>AZN PRIDE TO THE WIND WAKER! ;> | | Jullia S. Kim from USA says (18/Jun/2003): | THIS GAME IS AWSOME! what is wrong with the graphics!?! They're awsome! The story line also proves that the wind waker is the perfect game so stop whining about the graphic!!! They're helle sweet! Thats right you heard it! HELLA SWEET! ehem... sorry about that out burst but I got frustrated about people saying the graphics where lame...I truley love this game and all of the people who agree are awsome because the graphics are awsome and all but so are the peoples personality and the faceses Link and all the peopl,e make are hilariously fun to see. I draw Wind Waker pictures on a lot of art books and its fun to go on the internet and see the art work that other people do on ZeldaUniveres.com.A lot of people draw Link for a living(practically me...) but some peopl,e made the ocarina of time Link look like the Wind Waker practically.
| Best Zelda game of 2003! | | Anthony Filipas from Oregon, USA says (18/Jun/2003): | Wind Waker is the most coolest game I ever seen. Its a much better Zelda game then the other Zeldas from N64. The game has hours and hours of non-stop action. A must buy for any Gamecube owner. Lots of awsome weapons and kick butt attacks. Zelda has returned.....better than EVER!!!
| Not the best, but not the worst | | Joseph from San Antonio, TX says (17/Jun/2003): | I'm sure everything I'm about to say has already been said, but here goes . . . I'm 25 years old and have been a Zelda player since the 80s. I've played most but not all of the titles, and I have to say Windwaker falls close behind Ocarina, Majora, and, the best, A Link to the Past.
I have no qualms with the graphics. In fact, they help distinguish this particular chapter from the others, and given that Windwaker is set generations after the other Zelda games, it seems logical that he and his world would look different. For example, when you visit Hyrule underwater, the Link statue looks like the old (teenager) Link from OoT. Also, the graphics are some of the most charming I've ever seen in a video game. Bright, vivid colors. Link has a wide range of facial expressions. I love the waves of the ocean and watching the sun rise and set. Light and shadow are rendered superbly. And the game feels as if there is real gravity. When Link falls, he falls fast and hard, as opposed to some games where, if you fall, you practically drift to the ground. When you climb out of water, you remain wet for about a minute: you leave footprints in sand or dirt, and droplets drip from your clothes if you climb a ladder. What's ironic is a lot of people say this game is not realistic, when in fact, because of the light/shadow, gravity, and dry/wet issues, it is very realistic---in a cartoony sort of way.
The music and sound effects are very enjoyable and actually add a cinematic element to the game. When you strike at an enemy, the music strikes a chord, and with each successive blow, the chord rises in pitch. Very original. The score includes some nice Celtic music with nylon guitars and flutes. It would have been nice to FINALLY hear Link, Zelda, and Gannon speak. You only hear them gasp or grunt or laugh. Maybe next time . . .
Playability is half-and-half. Swordplay is easy enough. No real challenging moves or combos. But on the flip side, it gets annoying and interrupts gameplay when you have to go to your inventory and select a new object ESPECIALLY if you're in the middle of a fight. But of course, you did the same in all the other games, so that's a bit unfair to say. Which reminds me. Where are all the neat, original items? You get about as many (and the same) items as you did in Link to the Past, which was for the SUPER NINTENDO! In MM, on the N64, you got all these items PLUS another inventory screen of masks! This is the GameCube! You should be able to have ten times as many items as before! Some should at least be a little different or original. (The grappling hook and telescope are kind of cool, though.) During some levels, you can easily guess which item you will acquire.
So yes, graphics and sound are decent, but where the developers really drop the ball is the game itself. Not only are the graphics, as some would say, "childish," but so are the objectives and puzzles and dungeons and bosses. You get so many hints in this game. If it's not the dragon boat, it's the pirate's jewel or the fish giving you pointers and clues. At least in Metroid Prime you can turn the hints off. Some hints are necessary, but when they reveal EVERYTHING, it starts to ruin the fun. Among the other Zelda titles I mentioned, you use your brain the least during this one. A Link to the Past established all the puzzles used in Windwaker. Lighting torches to open doors, moving objects to rest on switches, etc. Yes, yes, we've seen it before. Bosses are routine, and, in fact, most closely resemble those on LttP (especially the sand serpent). And I may be wrong, but it seems you have fewer temples to go through in Windwaker than ever before. Seven or eight, maybe, and the rest of the time, you're sailing from island to island (which, before you acquire the warp spell, gets very boring). Which brings me to my next point. Again, this is the GameCube. You're out in this sea, which you expect to be vast and full of all these incredible lands. Much to the contrary, the world feels so enclosed and limiting, whereas the world in MM seemed limitless. I could get lost in MM. The islands in Windwaker, on the other hand, are so small it's pathetic. Standing on one side, you could spit to the other. Many of the secret chambers are not so secret as they once were, because they're hiding under the same old boulders. In short (too late), everything that once made the Zelda series original and exciting has become routine and predictable.
If you're new to the series, have fun! But if you've played the others, you will find nothing new. I guess I'm the opposite from everyone else. I loved the graphics and disliked the game. Nintendo will have to do some major brainstroming for the next Zelda title if they hope to keep the series fresh.
