Mario Kart Double Dash Worth it or not?

steve from melb,australia says (24/Nov/2003):
The True spirit of any Mario game has always
been simple to play and become very addictive
mario kart has over the years brang a racing kart
experince which has the most influeced characters
for Nintendo which sony tried with crash bandicoot and failed
in 2000 if i remember.

This is a great game to play as the game unfolds,
showing what mario kart was all about and the action
characters the levels.

It seems only the begining another mario kart is ever going
to come out more levels are required i know 12 levels are huge
but they seemed to be similar to the previous n64 and snes versions.

The new version seem to break ground with the two players on the same kart and the multi player but need to have more secrets and levels to unlock, and a bonus game of mario kart etc like a snes version but redone with different levels as well the characters.

Great game to play, just not enough to keep playing for a while
unless your having a gathering of mates then take out the game from the shelf where it s collecting dust.

Pros and Cons36019

A gamer from Milwaukee, Wisconsin says (24/Nov/2003):
It seems unfair to say "it was a great game, but." Nevertheless, despite the greatness of Mario Kart: Double Dash, there are certain things about the other Mario Kart games that we wish were still around. I never played the SNES version, so I cannot make that comparison. The GBA one was possibly the most annoying, and unfair of all. My true MK test is the glorious N64 version. Nothing beat sabotaging a group of enemies on the ramp in Wario Stadium with a banana strand or lightning bolt, so they'd all fall a half lap behind you. Ha! Here, the strands are gone. replaced by the cumbersome giant banana that only DK and Diddy can use. You can no longer hit the breaks to keep from slipping out on a banana peel. You can no longer "hold" items behind your cart to protect you from incoming attacks. The battle stages that were once glorious in the N64 version are now just plain ol' square fields. There is no longer element of hide-and-seek, or the thrill of the hunt as there was before.

Most of the improvements on the title are for the better, though. The enemy AI is markedly improved. Enemies seem to crash with reckless abandon. Their recovery time is suspect however, especially the heavyweights. If you fall off the track, you'll find that you don't go from first place to last within 2 seconds, as you once did. In previous games the characters were pixels or model scans, here they are far more animated and beautifully rendered than ever before. The spoken character dialog is a lot less annoying, and at times, quite hilarious. There's a lot more strategy in choosing characters. The tracks may seem like rehashes in some cases, but insane tracks like the Wario Coliseum more than make up for that. The higher speed tracks are remarkably brutal, but I guess we wouldn't have it any other way. Random Mario baddies also line the tracks, like goombas, piranah plants, and the most annoying villains in Mario Sunshine -- those round beach ducks that flip you high into the air, just to hear you scream. I'm glad that Toad made his way into this game somehow. Now only if only I could unlock him.

Multiplayer can be loads of fun, but next time, I'd like to see eight or more mammoth battle stages, complete with multiple floors, hidden paths, stage specific goodies, and of course ONLINE PLAY! C'mon Nintendo, bite the Bullet Bill.

Hmmmmmmm35899

A gamer from Newcastle, England says (23/Nov/2003):
This game is good, i'd even go as far to say it's very good. But you also have to ask yourself what could have been. As usual the one player gradually gets a little boring. Once you've unlocked everything there isn't much to keep you going back for more. You can unlock Toad, Toadette, Petey Piranha and King Boo as contollable characters. The karts you unlock don't seem a little unrewarding though you can unlock two more battle arena's aswel. But, and this is a big but, the battle arena's are the biggest gripe i have with this game. The only decent battle arena is the one with the warp pipes on it. Why didn't they just recreate at least one arena from the old SNES mario kart? four or more players on that would have been superb. The trouble is that there is alot of luck element involved when your just in one big square with no corner to cut off those pesky red shells tailing ya!!! The time trial also seems a little uninspiring. The old SNES version required pin point cornering and seemed all together a little more controllable. Here you'll find yourself flying all over the track no matter how heavy your Kart. Don't get me wrong, this game is good. You can still have hours of laughs with ya mates but the one player gets to boring to fast. there isn't enough to keep you interested. Four players is where it's all happening. I've burnt away a fare few hours on four players with this game. you may say there's nothing better than a bit of four play, wink wink.

Greatest Mario Kart Yet35863

Sparx from Ohio USA says (22/Nov/2003):
This game rocks! The new weapons are great, especially the character specials. I can't really see anything wrong with this game. Racing 1-8 people together is really awsome. Still the battle mode levels could be tweaked a bit, but nothing to frown too much about. The computer enemies still "cheat" to win but it was expected. I mean who can get three blue shells shot at you in a row. Anyway I had no trouble beating the cups. I think everyone loves the challenge of Double Dash. Everyone could beat Mario Kart 64 but you have to be a good racer to get all 1st places on all cup mode alone on 150cc (even though I still think 100cc is harder). Hope Nintendo makes another one, but until then go Yoshi, Diddy, Toad, and Koopa.

Not bad, but could have been better35740

A gamer from Herts, England says (21/Nov/2003):
As a nintendo fan, I usually get quite excited when a new game comes out especially Zelda or Mario Kart. (Zeldas good, but far too easy!) - Mario Kart has some cool features but they're missed out on a few classic elements of the original. The battle modes were one of the best features, and they just seem a bit boring now, the battle courses are a bit uninspiring apart from the one with the pipes, and as such I haven't played them as much as I would have if they had done it right. Some of the race courses could do with some improvement, but they're not bad, the star cup is pretty crazy. It does annoy me though when you're boosting past another charcter at breakneck speed, yet they are still right behind u and take over within seconds. I still like it, but it could have been so much better - stop being lazy nintendo, it doesn't suit ya!

My wishes finally fulfilled!!!!!!!35774

Rich from Portland, OR, USA says (21/Nov/2003):
Mario Kart: Double Dash!! How brilliant is this. Two characters per car in a quite outstanding sequel to the last games. In my opinion, the graphics are unmatched in any Mario Kart game, although some aspects don't hold up quite as well. The courses are quite fun, although they somewhat lack in creativity and imagination. Not to say that this makes it any less exciting, but I had expected a little more. The only real dissapointment that I found was that you can not jump. That aspect could really come in handy, although two people per vehicle would probably make it really hard to jump turn. On another note, I didnt really like the battle mode courses, until I unlocked Luigi's Mansion. It is true N64 style, and a great looking course. Overall I feel that this is my favorite Gamecube game so far, although the original for Super NES is my favorite game ever, but this is great, and I will definately play it far longer than two weeks, like all my other games. I predict it will be in the top games for up to a few years, based on the many player combinations, and fun factor. Mario Kart will always be the best there is!!!!!!!!!!!

The Return of True Kart Racing Fun!!!!!35697

Adam from Beeton, Ontario, Canada says (20/Nov/2003):
It's been some time since the days of Mario Kart 64, so Double Dash is more then a welcome sight. The game is beautiful and plays even better. It feels like a perfect mix between the past Mario Kart experiences. It feels slightly slower then Mario Kart 64 but that's probobly realistic since since this time around there's two people in one kart. The two people kart system is flawless in design and strangely feels almost natural. It also adds a little more depth to the challenge of choosing your characters. Another plus is that you can do Grand Prix mode cooperatively with one person driving and the other riding shotgun. Overall it is an intensely fun game that will provide hours of multiplayer entertainment in the years to come.

The old game with better graphics35652

Indolent from South Florida says (19/Nov/2003):
Awsome! i felt like i was 12 again playing the old version on my SuperNES...

They kept the game play and the frustration level down, like the origional and just enhancesd the graphics.

The only thing i do not like is that there are not many levels.. they could have fit at least 100 on the DVD..

Replay value is at the top.

Challenging and an excellent multiplayer game!35570

CyberSterk from Norway says (18/Nov/2003):
Double Dash is the game I've enjoyed the most since the SNES version. The 2-on-1 kart consept has taken the game to a new height (if possible). 2-player GrandPrix is the one thing I've missed the most on MarioKart64, so I'm glad they decided to bring it to the GameCube. Single player has lots of challenge and fun, and multiplayer will get you on your toes. This is a game which will be remembered!

ITS BRILL!!35594

Joe from England says (18/Nov/2003):
Kart racing game for 1-8 players featuring classic Nintendo characters
Pick a partner and race through wild courses as you compete in tough circuits
Choose from a huge cast: Luigi, Peach, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Wario, and many more
Link the game with eight other players using a broadband adapter and race each other
Bonus disc includes 6 playable demos and 7 mini-movies

The Mushroom Kingdom just got a whole lot more hectic as Mario & Co. double up for furious kart racing! The latest in the acclaimed Mario Kart series is here, and this time you won't be racing alone! Each kart holds two racers, so choose from Mario, Luigi, Peach, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Yoshi, Birdo, Wario, Waluigi, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Bowser, Bowser Jr., Koopa, and Paratroopa. Pair them up any way you see fit. The character in front handles driving duties, while the character in the rear doles out damage with six normal items and eight special items that only specific characters can use. Racers can swap places at any time, so switch it up on the fly to make the best use of your items as you tear around curves and over huge elevation changes. Not only that, up to eight players can participate in a linked game using a broadband adapter to hook up game systems and multiple televisions!

Double Fun!35523

James McLelland from Jersey says (17/Nov/2003):
Mario Kart is back on the Gamecube! Instead of having your own kart, you get 2 people. If you have 4 four people who drives in 2 karts, a 5 to 8 player game will include two Gamecube consoles with broadband adapters and 2 TVs. If you think you played any other Mario Kart games, buy this!

Mario & Baby Bowser rule!35464

Rob Ferguson from Hampshire, England says (16/Nov/2003):
What a Brilliant Game! The best game on Gamecube, hands down. The best BGM in the game has got to be on Mushroom bridge and Mushroom City, It kicks! This game beats F-zero on the fun meter any day and the graphics are amazing. It could definitly last for a few years, especially due to the excellent multiplayer. There are three modes this time, Baloon Battle, Shine theif and Bob-omb blast, and there are 4 arenas: Cookie land, Block City, Nintendo Gamecube and Pipe Plaza and its rumoured that you can unlock Luigi's Mansion too. Speaking of unlocking things, you have to unlock Toad this time by doing a lot in one player Grand Prix which is harder than ever because opponents fire all weapons and have pretty good accuracy. I would give it 97% Well Done Nintendo!!!!

Buy this game!35490

Jibz from London, England says (16/Nov/2003):
If your looking for a great multiplayer game which offers hours of quality entertainment for you and your friends, Mario Kart: Double Dash is the game for you! Unlike previous versions of the game, players have two people per kart, one peron driving and one person throwing the weapons. In my opinion, this is the best racing game ever and deserves a place in anyones collection!

Its back but way over hyped!!!35387

Eddy from LONDON says (15/Nov/2003):
Mario kart double dash is everyone cheer!!!!!
Yes its brilliant yes its the best multiplayer game out but no its not Mario kart 64!!!! shock!!! :0
The game comes with loads of multiplayer friendly options including two new battle modes and an option from two players to drive a kart at once. One player controlling weapons and one driving and its actually fun! :) The one player is also great and the new special weapons make the game even crazier then before but where the game lets itself down is the track. Sure theres loads of them just like every other mario kart but its the design and legth of some of the tracks which are poor. They just aren't as imagenative as the last games with with few fun features apart from the special cup!!!
And worst of all the YOU CAN'T JUMP!! NOOOoooooooOOooOOoooo :0
But dont let this put you off the game is really cool and puts and is defiantly a game you spend the whole night and morning playing with your friends while getting pissed and off your head when the pubs closed!!!! worth every penny. its just not 64 :(

Mario is back! Fantastic!35418

Seventhson from Winchester, England says (15/Nov/2003):
It's been a long time coming but Mario and his kart have made its way on the 'Cube. This time, however, you have a racing partner! All the old weapons are here and the gameplay has moved away from the N64 version in favour of the SNES style. The graphics are typically Nintendo, bright, colorful and functional and the sound is top notch.
Buy this!
